Car hire insurance in Albania comes with each car and is set out on the car's page in the search for cars collected at Tirana Airport. The Albania terms add rules that apply to every car when driving in Albania, whoever owns it: what standard insurance leaves out, what to do after damage, and where no insurance is valid at all.
What does standard insurance not cover?
Damage to the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen and the interior of the car. The terms exclude all four from standard insurance on every rental in Albania.
Deliberate damage is not insured either: the terms make the insurance invalid for damage caused by intentional vandalism or by neglect.
Can I book more cover than standard?

Notify the rental company immediately and obtain a police report, unless the rental company agrees otherwise. The terms state that failing to do both cancels the insurance on the car and makes the renter fully responsible.
The rental company's contact details are in the booking email. The phone number given at booking has to stay reachable for the whole rental, so the company can reach you too.
Where is a hire car not insured in Albania?
Hire cars may travel only on paved public roads. The terms prohibit five routes: Berat to Përmet through the Osumi Canyon and on the SH74 motorway, Tirana to Qafë-Shtamë Nature Park through Lake Bovilla, Thethi to Valbona through the mountains, Memaliaj to Berat through Martallozi, and Krujë to Burreli through Qafë-Shtamë Nature Park. Unpaved exits to beaches are prohibited too.
Five regions are closed to hire cars: Tomorri Mountain National Park, Lura National Park, Lake Koman, Korab Mountain and Qafë-Shtamë Nature Park. The terms give the reason as the emergency condition of the road surface, and no insurance is valid on these routes or in these regions.
Deposit

How does the deposit work?
The deposit is set per car by the rental company and shown before you pay. Some cars carry no deposit, some take a low deposit, and some accept it in cash; the search filters for "No deposit" and "Low deposit under 100€".
Where a car needs a credit card, it must be a physical embossed card in the main driver's name, present at the pick-up. Some rental companies accept a debit card under the same conditions, stated during booking and on the voucher.
What costs are never covered by the insurance?
Fuel, parking, fines and toll roads are paid by the renter. A car returned with less fuel than at pick-up is charged at the rental company's rates, and a car returned too dirty to inspect is washed at the renter's cost.
Is the car insured outside Albania?
The terms require you to tell the rental company in advance of any trip outside the country, so it can complete the required documents. Select your border-crossing route when booking.
